# Multidex error for apps with over 64K methods

World's #1 PDF SDK Library for Web, Mobile, Server, Desktop

When your app and the libraries it references exceed 65,536 methods, you might encounter a build error that indicates your app has reached the limit of the Android build architecture:

{% tabs %}
{% tab title="Groovy" %}
{% code lineNumbers="true" %}

```groovy
Error:The number of method references in a .dex file cannot exceed 64K.
Learn how to resolve this issue at https://developer.android.com/tools/building/multidex.html
Error:com.android.dex.DexIndexOverflowException: method ID not in [0, 0xffff]: 65536
```

{% endcode %}
{% endtab %}
{% endtabs %}

The number `65,536` represents the maximum number of methods that can be referenced in a single Dalvik Executable (DEX) bytecode file. To resolve this issue, you need to enable `multidex` for your app which allows your app to build and read multiple DEX files. For more information on how to enable multidex, see: [Building apps with over 64K methods](https://developer.android.com/studio/build/multidex.html#about)

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://docs.apryse.com/android/get-started/faq/multidex.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
