Opening and Saving Files in Appian

Overview

Apryse WebViewer is an Appian component that allows you to open and edit the following file formats in Appian:

  • PDF, PDF/A
  • DOCX, XLSX, PPTX (MS Office software or licenses are not required)
  • JPG, PNG

After editing the file succcessfully, you can save a new version or save to the same document.

Opening Files

You have multiple options for opening files:

  • appianDocId is used to pass a file id of a document stored in Appian. You can pass a single file id or a list of ids. When passing a list, all files will be merged into one document in the sequence of the file list.
  • url is used to pass a file url (the URL has to return the actual file). Note that you must have access to the file, and may have to add your Appian environment to the CORS whitelist of the externally hosted file.
  • Filepicker - you can use the sandwich menu on the top left of the viewer UI to select a local file and open it in the viewer inside of Appian. Note that you may have to enable filepicker in your UI customization if the Open File option is not visible in the menu.

Saving files

You have the following options to save files:

  • Save - use the Save button on the top right to save changes to a new document
  • Save as - use the Save as.. button on the top right to save the document as a new file. You can rename the file in the modal that pops up
  • Extracting pages - you can open the Left Panel in the viewer and select pages that you would like to extract. Use the Extract Pages button to open a modal, that lets you create a new document from the selected pages. You also have the option of removing the selected pages from the current document you are working on, or keeping the document intact after page extraction.
  • Downloading files - you can use the sandwich menu on the top left of the viewer to save a file to your local computer
